A Good Marriage is a 2014 American psychological thriller moving-picture show based on the novella of the same proper name past Stephen King, from the 2010 collection Total Dark, No Stars. It stars Joan Allen, Anthony LaPaglia, Kristen Connolly and Stephen Lang. It was released on October 3, 2014.

Bob (Anthony LaPaglia) and Darcy Anderson (Joan Allen) are happily married with three children. I evening while Bob is abroad on a business trip, Darcy goes into the garage to search for batteries. When rummaging through Bob's things, she comes beyond pornographic magazines containing sadomasochistic images. Upon looking further, she finds a cloak-and-dagger compartment backside the garage'due south baseboard and inside is a pocket-sized box containing ID cards of Marjorie Duvall, a victim of a series killer known as "Beadie".

Horrified, Darcy looks upward Beadie online and cross-checks Bob's business organisation records with the locations of the murders, finding that he was close to well-nigh of the crimes. She also sees a photograph of Duvall wearing earrings identical to the ones Bob recently gave her as an anniversary gift. Not long later Bob is buried, a retired bilious detective named Holt Ramsey (Stephen Lang), visits the business firm. Ramsey has spent years investigating the Beadie murders and had questioned Bob previously. Ramsey tells Darcy that he suspected Bob was the killer, since his Chevrolet Suburban was seen in the vicinity of each victim. Darcy realises that Ramsey has figured out her function in Bob's expiry, but she rejects whatsoever accusations and Ramsey leaves. Afterward that night when Ramsey is admitted to hospital, Darcy visits him and threatens to smother him with a pillow, claiming "two tin keep a clandestine if one of them is expressionless". One time she admits the truth, Ramsey assures her that she did the right thing.

Darcy returns home and enjoys life on her own, subsequently realising that Bob was close to beingness caught and therefore wasn't as smart as he thought he was. She finds that she tin now be at peace with herself.

On May xix, 2012, ScreenDaily reported that Volition Battersby and Peter Askin were producing an adaptation of A Good Union; Askin was announced as directing Stephen King'south screenplay of his own novella.[two] On September 11, 2012, Joan Allen was announced as the atomic number 82 in the movie.[3]

The film, when announced, caused controversy when Rex said that he took influence from serial killer Dennis Rader. Kerri Rawson, Rader's girl, said that King was exploiting her father's victims by taking inspiration from his life.[iv]

Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, reports that 35% of 20 surveyed critics gave the picture a positive review; the boilerplate rating was iv.8/10.[five] Metacritic rated information technology 43/100 based on 8 reviews.[six] Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter chosen it "a incomparably minor" accommodation that "fails to fulfill the potential of its provocative premise".[7] Andy Webster of The New York Times chosen it a "low-central, bodacious thriller" with a strong functioning from Allen.[viii] Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times called information technology "a wry, former-fashioned game of cat and mouse" with good interim.[9] Pete Vonder Haar of The Village Vocalisation wrote that it is a serviceable, nondescript thriller that was a surprising choice to adapt to motion picture.[x] Rod Pocowatchit of The Wichita Eagle rejected concerns of exploitation, but said that the movie comes across every bit a depression-budget made-for-TV motion picture.[11] Kiva Reardon of The A.V.
