Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition Fane Poison Master

Fane's unique design is iconic to DOS2, here are some ideas for which classes suit him best.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes above and beyond the normal RPG with 14 classes, 17 combat abilities, 7 civil abilities, 6 attributes, and a dizzying number of skills and spells. This amounts to near-endless combinations of unique class builds for custom characters and companions. This may sound like a lot to consider, but good news! I've already done some of the work for you in this guide to DOS2 preset builds.

Fane can be tricky to build a class for; he has a couple of extra things to keep in mind, his undead status, and the Mask of the Shapeshifter. Undead creatures take damage from normal potions and spells but regain health from poison and casting necromancy spells. With that in mind here are the 5 best preset builds for Fane.

5. Wizard

Look, Amadia! No hands!

Fane's default class is one you'll want to try at least once! Being a Wizard means dealing magical damage from range and using status effects to give your team an edge. Starting points in Pyro and Geo give you instant access to some explosive combos using oil, poison, and fire.

For Fane, a wizard class build gives him access to healing with poison spells like Contamination. Consider picking up the Elemental Affinity talent to benefit from fire surfaces, as his poison clouds and puddles are inevitably going to ignite. This technique makes Wizard the best class to use poison spells to heal with as it can benefit from this drawback.

The Wizard Excels at;

  • Heavy magical damage from range and inflicting status effects; burning, poisoned, and slowed.
  • Gain access to devastating end-game spells with awesome effects!
  • Combat Abilities; Pyromancy, Geomancy
  • Civil Ability; Loremaster
  • Attributes; Intelligence, Constitution

4. Witch

Flying broomstick not included.

The Witch is a hybrid fighter and caster dealing physical damage with blades and spells. Similar to a Rogue build but with access to healing via Necromancy spells. Your skeletal companion will slice his way across the battlefield while stealing enemy vitality for himself.

Necromancy is invaluable to undead characters and pairs well with other physical damage specialties. Deal damage, status effects, and heal simultaneously. The Witch is the perfect choice for making use of Necromancy alongside proficiency in Finesse and Stealth.

The Witch Excels at;

  • Versatile close and long-range fighting style, high mobility.
  • Non-flammable healing with simultaneous ranged damage.
  • Combat Abilities; Scoundrel, Necromancy
  • Civil Ability; Persuasion
  • Attributes; 1 Finesse, 1 Intelligence, 1 Constitution

3. Cleric

A Fane of many faces also wields many classes well.

The Cleric starts with proficiency in the magic of both life and death, making it an interesting choice for an Undead character. A starting point in Strength makes Clerics a good mix of fighter, support, and mage. The Hydrosophist skill includes magical defense buffs, offensive ice spells, and healing.

Not the oddball choice it may seem! Just because Fane himself can't benefit from the Hydro skill's healing spells doesn't mean his companions can't. In a pinch, throw heals at other undead to deal piercing damage over multiple turns that ignores magic armor and has no counter.

The Cleric Excels at;

  • Mixed class dealing physical and magical damage with support elements.
  • An Undead Cleric can heal himself and others with Hydro/Necro ability combo.
  • Combat Abilities; Hydrosophist, Necromancy
  • Civil Ability; Bartering
  • Attributes; 1 Strength, 1 Intelligence, 1 Constitution

2. Shadowblade

What better harbinger of death than a skeleton?

Shadowblades are stealthy assassins using invisibility to gain tactical advantages and cause mischief. The Scoundrel abilities allow for quick, finesse-based attacks and critical damage potential. Polymorph opens up some interesting possibilities with varied skills like Chameleon Cloak, Skin Graft, and Apotheosis.

The biggest benefit for Fane here is Thievery. His unlimited lock-picking ability with his skeletal fingers makes him an ideal candidate for rogue-adjacent builds. This paired with an Undead character's need to lie low make for an effective infiltrator.

The Shadowblade Excels at;

  • Stealthy thief build, accessing extra routes, treasures and content.
  • Highly customizable with Polymorph skills, buffs, status effects, and mobility.
  • Combat Abilities; Scoundrel, Polymorph
  • Civil Ability; Thievery
  • Attributes; Finesse, Wits

1. Inquisitor

Fane fills his clothing out well for someone who's no skin and all bone.

The Inquisitor is a heavy-hitting melee fighter that supplements vitality with Necromancy. Warfare abilities deal powerful blows and manipulate enemy behavior. Draw aggro away from allies while casting spells to offset your damage or summoning Undead creatures to aid you.

Considering Necromancy's usefulness to Fane for healing potential, Inquisitor is one of his best options to take besides his default Wizard. The synergy between War/Necro is similar in potency to the Pyro/Geo effect, just with the opposite functionality. You wind up with a nearly unstoppable frontline damage dealer who can mitigate their own risk with skills like Infect and Living on the Edge.

The Inquisitor Excels at;

  • Dealing physical damage with big weapons and creatures.
  • Hitting hard and hurting less.
  • Combat Abilities; Warfare, Necromancy
  • Civil Ability; Telekinesis
  • Attributes; 1 Strength, 1 Intelligence, 1 Constitution
